Regents Budget Request

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The state Board of Regents is putting together a budget request for South Dakota's university system.

The board planned to approve a budget request for next year during a meeting Thursday at Black Hills State University in Spearfish. The board's budget request will go to Gov. Dennis Daugaard (DOO'-gahrd), who will consider it when he proposes his state budget to the Legislature in December. The lawmakers will have the final say on the budget for the year beginning next July.

The governor and the Legislature cut state spending by 10 percent for the current year, a move that reduced state support for higher education by $17.5 million.

The regents approved a 6.9 percent tuition increase and a package of spending cuts for the current year.
