SD Firefighter Killed

8/12/11

A South Dakota firefighter is killed and two others are injured while battling the
Coal Canyon fire northwest of Edgemont.

The Governor's Office reports that 23-year-old Trampus Haskvitz of Hot Springs
died as a result of injuries he suffered when fire engine he was working on was
burned over by the blaze.

The two injured firefighters are also from Hot Springs. The three were seasonal
firefighting employees of the South Dakota Wildland Fire Suppression Division.
One of the injured men, Austin Whitney, was taken to a burn center in Colorado.
Kevin Fees is in stable condition in the Rapid City hospital.

Governor Dennis Daugaard says it's very sad news.  He adds, "Too many times
in recent weeks, South Dakotans have been reminded just how much we owe to
the firefighters, law enforcement, and others who risk their lives to protect us all.””
