RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A forest fire in southwest South Dakota
is now 60 percent contained after an operation aimed at eliminating
brush that could further fuel the blaze.
Monday's operation involved a helicopter crew dropping
fire-starting spheres the size of pingpong balls on unburned areas
to starve the fire of fuel. Officials say the size of the Coal
Canyon Fire is stable at about 5,200 acres.
About 470 people remain on the scene, patrolling the fire
perimeter and doing mop-up operations.
Lightning last Thursday sparked the blaze that killed one
firefighter and injured four more. Funeral services are Today in Hot
Springs for 23-year-old Trampus Haskvitz.
