Brookings police arrest a man this morning wanted on several charges
stemming from a sword fight in Beltrami County, Minnesota.
The sheriff's office there contacted Brookings police with word that
28-year-old Lucas French might be in this area. He had escaped from
custody.
Police located the suspect's car on the 500 block of 6th Ave. S. and put
it under surveillance. Lt. Derrck Powers says shortly after nine this
morning, police saw the car move and shortly thereafter stopped the
vehicle. The stop was made at the intersection of 2nd St. S. and South
Main.
Police had been informed that French might be dangerous, so he was
placed under arrest with guns drawn. Two small children in the car were
taken into protective custody. The arrest went down without incident. The
state Division of Criminal Investigation assisted.
French allegedly injured his 10-year-old son while involved in a July
sword fight with another man near Bemidji, MN. He's facing Minnesota
charges that include felony child abuse, assault, and obstructing the
legal process.
French is being held at the Brookings County jail pending extradition
proceedings.
