PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Officials have documented extensive Missouri
River flood damage to a causeway that's been a popular recreation
spot in the Pierre area.
The causeway links Steamboat Park to LaFramboise Island. City and
Army Corps of Engineers officials inspected the area Wednesday.
City Administrator Leon Schochenmaier says much of the causeway
has been washed away by this summer's flooding, and the remaining
asphalt parking lot, roadway and electrical infrastructure are extensively
damaged. Some of the causeway also remains covered by floodwaters.
The fishing piers appear to be intact but will need cleaning.
Schochenmaier says officials have not yet discussed plans for
repairs. How much they will cost and who will pay also has not been
determined.
