Man Pleads No Conest to Assaulting a Law Officer



     PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - An Onida man has pleaded no contest to
punching a female South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper three times
in the face during a traffic stop north of Pierre about a year ago.
     Seventy-seven year old Chester Strickland pleaded
no contest to charges of assaulting a law officer and possessing a
concealed weapon without a permit. Prosecutors dropped a charge of
obstructing a law officer.
     Strickland entered his plea on Tuesday, a day before his trial
was to begin. He could face up to three years behind bars when he
is sentenced on Nov. 14.
