SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The number of people employed full time
by the state or by a local government in South Dakota is dropping.
The number of people the state government employed full time dropped from
12,574 last year to 12,133 last week in South Dakota.
That number is expected to go lower still because Gov. Dennis
Daugaard and state lawmakers cut $127 million from the budget year
that started July 1. The cuts led to some layoffs, though most
losses are coming through attrition.
Nationally, there was a 4 percent drop in the number of people
employed by nonfederal government entities from 2009 to last year.
