SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A University of South Dakota professor
says the state's strong farm economy has helped South Dakota
whether the economic recession and its aftermath better than other
parts of the country.
Ralph Brown said that
there's no question that South Dakota is faring better than other
states.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics says 21,000 South Dakotans were
unemployed in July. That's a rate of 4.7 percent, half the national
average of 9.3 percent. Although the state is 4,200 jobs down from
a peak in 2008, July payroll numbers were up 1.1 percent from the
same month a year earlier.
Augustana College economics professor Reynold Nesiba says the
problem in South Dakota is not just finding employment. It's
finding employment that pays enough to support a family.
