South Dakota Honors 9/11 Victims

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Hundreds of South Dakotans marked the
Sept. 11 anniversary by remembering the victims lost in the attacks
on the World Trade Center as well as members of the armed forces
who have lost their lives in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
About 400 people took part a grassroots event at a downtown
Sioux Falls hotel. Former New York Police Department Lt. William
Dement shared his story of rescue and recovery in the days after
the attacks.
Banners memorializing the 35 South Dakotans who have died in the
wars since 9/11 were also on display.
The Sioux Falls Veterans Administration Hospital also put on a
ceremony honoring veterans, active duty military personnel and
first responders.
Several other ceremonies throughout the state marked the
anniversary. South Dakota had no state ceremony.
