RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A Puerto Rican man who prosecutors say
drugged his girlfriend's beverages in an attempt to kill her fetus
pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.
Thirty-four-year-old Alfredo
Vargas pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempted fetal homicide
Tuesday. Prosecutors say Vargas, who was extradited from San Juan,
Puerto Rico, tried to kill the fetus by drugging the girlfriend
sometime between February and May 2010.
Court papers say Vargas' girlfriend became suspicious and had
police test one of her drinks. They discovered an herb called Blue
Cohosh. The herb is commonly used as part of a tea to induce labor.
Vargas faces a maximum of 25 years in prison if he's found
guilty.
