SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) - A South Dakota National Guard unit that
served 16 months in Iraq in 2003-04 is now heading for a year of
duty in Afghanistan.
About 160 soldiers with the 842nd Engineer Company were
activated for duty at a ceremony in Spearfish on Wednesday. They
will go to Fort Bliss, Texas, on Friday to finish their training
before heading overseas.
Once in Afghanistan, the soldiers will handle duties such as
building roads and developing airfields.
The unit is based in Spearfish and has detachments in Sturgis
and Belle Fourche. It has 43 veterans.
