SD Prisons to Receive $1 Mil for Re-Entry Programs

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota will receive a $1 million
grant to help prison recidivism rates and adult prison re-entry
programs.
In 2009, the state was awarded $750,000 to implement programs
and strategies to reduce recidivism - the return to prison of those
who commit subsequent crimes or violate conditions of supervision.
The South Dakota Department of Corrections was notified last week
that the state's award amount was being increased for the second
year of the initiative to $1 million.
Secretary of Corrections Denny Kaemingk (KAY'-mink) says in a
release that the funding will help the DOC try to reach its goal of
reducing the recidivism rate by 50 percent within five years.
The re-entry initiative targets high risk and need offenders
that are paroling to the Sioux Falls and Rapid City areas.
