Statewide Homeless Count Starts Tuesday

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Housing for the Homeless
Consortium is holding its annual statewide homeless count on
Tuesday.
State Coordinator Lisa Bondy says this year's goal is to reach
the more rural areas of the state.
Volunteers are trained, teamed up, and given the supplies and
information necessary to conduct the count in their neighborhoods,
communities or counties. It's conducted by interacting with both
service agencies and homeless people.
The statewide survey is broken down into three geographical
areas according to counties - West River, East River and central
South Dakota.
     The 2010 count found 1,728 homeless individuals - 459 women, 809
men and 446 children.
