PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Supporters and opponents are gathering in
Pierre to give federal officials their views on a proposed pipeline
that would cross South Dakota as part of a plan to bring oil from
Canada into the U.S.
Thursday's hearing in Pierre was one of several the State
Department is holding before it decides whether to approve the
pipeline.
The proposed TransCanada Keystone XL pipeline would run 1,700
miles to deliver tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, to refineries
on the Gulf of Mexico. It would cross Montana, South Dakota,
Nebraska and Kansas before hooking up with TransCanada's existing
pipelines to move oil to Oklahoma and Texas.
South Dakota ranchers along the route worry that leaks could
hurt water supplies. Supporters say it would provide jobs and
reduce U.S. dependence on overseas oil.
