SF Police to Use Grant for DUI Patrols

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Sioux Falls police plan to use a $289,000 state grant to crack down on people who drive drunk.

The money is through the state Office of Highway Safety, which takes applications from law enforcement agencies across the state. Police Chief Doug Barthel says it will be used to battle drunken driving and to enforce traffic laws in high-crash areas through so-called "saturation patrols."

Minnehaha County State's Attorney Aaron McGowan says his office should be able to deal with any addition to its caseload.

Barthel says the city has received similar grants in the past, but not for this much money. In past years, the city has gotten less than $30,000.
