Girl Hit by Train is Recovering

STURGIS, S.D. (AP) - A 9-year-old girl hit by a train in Sturgis
is out of the hospital and recovering at home, but her mother says
she has a long road ahead.
Kiana Long was airlifted to a Rapid City hospital in critical
condition on Sept. 19 after being hit while walking home from
school. Authorities say the girl failed to get out of the way of
the train even though the conductor yelled and sounded the train's
horn.
The train was going about 20 mph. Kiana was struck in the head
by the ladder on the train's engine. Her mother, Dwanda Simmons,
says Kiana suffered skull fractures and bruises and now is dealing
with memory loss, headaches and seizures, and needs help to walk.
She attended school for one hour last Friday.
