BROOKINGS, SD. –– Bernie Hunhoff, editor, publisher, and founder of South Dakota Magazine, will keynote the eighth annual Empty Bowls soup supper benefiting Heifer International, to be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2011, at the Brookings United Church of Christ. The goal is to raise funds for the purchase of Heifer International livestock for persons living in poverty, here in the United States and around the world.

Bernie Hunhoff brings a deep understanding of and appreciation for the virtues and challenges of life in our prairie state. He is also actively involved in agricultural, economic, conservation, and political issues affecting South Dakota. Bernie will present his unique perspective on the subject of hunger during Empty Bowls 2011. Local youth are contributing to the event by developing a photographic montage that educates as well as inspires. Sioux Falls pianist Kristi Holler will provide the inspiring musical performance for the evening.

Ticketholders at the Empty Bowls event will select a handcrafted pottery bowl by Dave Huebner of Dakota Stoneware, Bushnell, then enjoy a simple but delicious meal of homemade soup, bread and dessert. The food will be prepared by the SDSU Food Science, Dietetics, and Hospitality Club with major donations by Aramark and Pegler-Sysco Foods. Attendees will have multiple opportunities throughout the evening to contribute to Heifer International through the virtual purchase of a variety of livestock, from bees to llamas. Gift cards will be available for those who may wish to donate to Heifer International in honor or in memory of a special occasion as a gift for a family member or friend.

Empty Bowls tickets are on sale now ($15 per person). Arrangements for the purchase of tickets may be made by calling the church at (605) 697-2882. Members of the public may also mail a check for the correct amount to the church (payable to the Brookings UCC, accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope).
