RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A 19-year-old South Dakota man charged
in a high speed chase asked a judge to send him to prison.
Judge Thomas Trimble honored Tyler Slowbear's request by
sentencing the Rapid City man to 18 months in the penitentiary.
Trimble says he would have sentenced Slowbear to jail time and
probation. The judge told Slowbear to contact his lawyer if he
changes his mind.
Slowbear's mother pleaded with the judge to keep the original
sentence. She says her son doesn't understand the implications of
going to prison.
Prosecutor Wayne Verhuizen says it's disheartening to see
someone as young as Slowbear think he can't succeed on probation.
Slowbear pleaded guilty to a felony charge of eluding a police
vehicle. Three misdemeanor charges were dropped.
