STURGIS, S.D. (AP) - This summer's Sturgis Motorcycle Rally had
about 50,000 fewer bikers than last year.
Rally officials estimate that nearly 417,000 visitors attended this
year's event in the Black Hills, which is nearly an 11 percent drop
compared to last year's 70th anniversary rally.
The estimate is based on traffic counts, the amount of garbage
collected and attendance at various venues.
Earlier, officials reported that sales tax revenue in Sturgis
was down 10 percent from the previous year.
Officials say the drop is somewhat expected as numbers
historically go down the year after an anniversary rally.
