RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The Rapid City Police Department is
expanding its street crimes unit.
Police Chief Steve Allender says the unit will grow from six to
10 members by June and expand into another neighborhood. The unit
in April 2010 began patrolling the downtown area, city parks and a
bike path.
The department is using a federal Justice Department grant of
about $824,000 to expand the unit. The funding covers pay and
benefits for the additional officers for three years. The police
department is required to cover the costs during a fourth year.
