A Jefferson, South Dakota man is killed on Interstate 29 while trying to aid the
victims of another crash near the South Dakota / Iowa border.
The Highway Patrol says 57-year-old Gerald J. Roth was struck and killed as
he entered a lane of traffic to try to warn approaching vehicles about a two-vehicle
crash that had taken place a short time earlier.
He was hit by a southbound S-U-V driven by 40-year-old Kenneth R. Farley
of Lincoln, Nebraska. Roth had seen the original crash, parked his vehicle on
the shoulder of the interstate and walked to the scene to help. Farley was not
injured.
The crash that caused Roth to stop and attempt to help involved two vehicles
and serious but non-life threatening injuries for the drivers
