Manufacturer Closes, 80 Jobs Lost



     SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A longstanding manufacturing company in
Sioux Falls is closing by early next year, putting nearly 80 people
out of a job.
     Texas-based Alamo Group says in a statement that it will close
the SMC plant in Sioux Falls and consolidate operations with its
facility in Gibson City, Ill. SMC makes agricultural equipment such
as front-end loaders and backhoes.
     SMC General Manager Shawn Cleary tells the Argus Leader that the
company has lost business it hasn't been able to recapture.
     The SMC plant has operated in Sioux Falls under various owners
since 1972.The closure does not affect Tiger Corp., an Alamo Group
facility in Sioux Falls that makes mowing equipment.
