SUMMIT SOCCER POW…IPFW's Tara O'Toole, Oakland's Anne Berschbach and South Dakota State's Kat Donovan were named The Summit League's Offensive and Co-Defensive Women's Soccer Players of the Week.
Donovan helped South Dakota State capture the top seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament with a 3-1 win over North Dakota State. The senior tied a season-high with eight saves with a 1.00 goals against average and .889 save percentage in the match.
O’Toole had eight points in a pair of IPFW wins last week. Berschbach posted a shutout in the 3-0 win at Western Illinois to secure a spot in the league tournament for Oakland.

SUMMIT SOCCER…With its 8-0-1 league record, South Dakota State earns the No. 1 seed for the 2011 Summit League Women's Soccer Championship. This marks the second time in school history the Jackrabbits have claimed the top seed and is their first out-right regular season championship after sharing the title in 2008 and 2009.
The 2011 women's soccer tournament takes place Nov. 4 & 6, at OU Soccer Field in Rochester, Mich.
No. 2 North Dakota State (14-3-2, 7-1-1 Summit) faces No. 3 UMKC (8-7-4, 6-2-1 Summit) in game one Friday, at 3 p.m. (EDT). No. 1 South Dakota State (12-5-2, 8-0-1 Summit) will meet No. 4 Oakland (8-10-1, 6-2-1 Summit) in Friday's second match at 6 p.m. (EDT).

BIG TEN FOOTBALL…Two different story lines have emerged midway through the Big Ten's inaugural season of divisional play.
The Legends Division is locked in a logjam at the top, as Michigan State, Nebraska and Michigan are tied with identical 3-1 conference records. But one school has emerged from the pack in the Leaders Division. Surprisingly, it's not preseason favorite Wisconsin.
Penn State is the last team unbeaten in Big Ten play at 5-0 in the conference. The Nittany Lions have a bye this week before a three-game gauntlet to close the regular season begins Nov. 12 against Nebraska. Road games also loom at Ohio State and Wisconsin.
Penn State might have trouble scoring points, but Purdue coach Danny Hope says coach Joe Paterno has one of the nation's best defenses.

ALABAMA-LSU…A huge college football game Saturday night as Louisiana State visits Alabama, with a Southeast Conference title, and a shot at a national championship, at stake.
Tide coach Nick Saban says every game is important: 97623 :22 “you make”.
LSU’s Les Miles says his team’s fortunate to be in this spot: 97624 :21 “that way”.
Miles says the Tigers’ linebackers have to play a great game.

VIKINGS STADIUM…Gov. Mark Dayton and legislative leaders say the Minnesota Vikings and their supporters should find a way to pay for a new stadium that doesn't include a tax increase. That leaves a large hole in the current proposal for a $1.1 billion stadium in suburban Ramsey County.
A joint statement from Dayton and leading lawmakers said there's too little support in the Legislature to exempt any proposed tax increase from a public vote. Without an exemption from the Legislature, a public vote would likely be held in November 2012.
A Vikings spokesman said a team official would comment on the latest development later Monday afternoon.

AP WBB…Brittney Griner of Baylor is a unanimous choice on The Associated Press' preseason All-America team in women's basketball. The 6-foot-8 junior received all 40 votes from a national media panel Tuesday, becoming the eighth player to be on every ballot.
Griner is joined on the preseason squad by Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins, Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike, Miami's Shenise Johnson and Tennessee's Shekinna Stricklen.
The only other unanimous selections were Maya Moore, Courtney Paris, Chamique Holdsclaw, Diana Taurasi, Alana Beard, Seimone Augustus and Candace Parker. Moore was a unanimous pick twice.
The preseason All-America team was first chosen before the 1995-96 season.

NCAA MAFIA…A Democratic congressman compared the NCAA to the Mafia over how it controls the lives of student athletes.
Rep. Bobby Rush says the NCAA is “one of the most vicious, most ruthless organizations ever created”. Rush says he would compare it to Al Capone and the Mafia.
Rush made the accusations at the forum called to look at the impact of "back-room deals, payoffs and scandals" in college sports. The congressman spoke after hearing from a couple of mothers of former student-athletes who complained of ill treatment by schools after their sons suffered injuries.
NCAA spokesman Bob Williams says Rush doesn't know the NCAA. He says the NCAA and its member institutions provide over two billion dollars annually in scholarships, financial assistance and academic support to student-athletes - second only to the federal government.
The NCAA requires schools to certify an athlete has insurance coverage for athletically-related injuries, up to the deductible of the NCAA Catastrophic Injury Insurance Program (currently $90,000). The insurance coverage can be offered by the school, a parent or a personal policy of the athlete.
