SDSU MBB…The South Dakota State men’s basketball team opens the exhibition schedule Thursday night, hosting Minnesota-Moorhead at eight at Frost Arena.
Head coach Scott Nagy says guard Nate Wolters figures to be one of the top players in the Summit League.
Nagy looks to Chad White, Brayden Carlson and Jordan Dykstra to make key contributions, and says senior Griffin Callahan is the glue that pulls the team together.
Nagy says defense will be the key.”.
Nagy says everyone will be chasing Oral Roberts in the conference race – beyond that, the league’s even.
Nagy says SDSU’s playing a tough non-conference schedule to prepare for league action.
NSU MBB…Northern State's Alex Thomas made his only 3-pointer at the buzzer, beating Butler 53-50 in Wednesday night's exhibition game.
Butler, the national runner-up each of the past two seasons, shot 32.7 percent from the field and was only 3 of 18 on 3s.
Center Andrew Smith led the Bulldogs with 19 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Khyle Marshall had 14 points and four rebounds. No other Butler players scored in double figures.
Roosevelt Jones' layup with 4:35 to go gave Butler a 50-41 lead, but the Bulldogs didn't score again and Thomas capped a game-ending 12-0 run with the winning 3.
Collin Pryor had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Northern State
SDSU SOCCER…South Dakota State will have a depleted roster when the Jackrabbits face Oakland Friday to open the Summit League soccer tournament.
Seven players have been suspended for at least the opening round game – three of them are out for the entire tournament. The suspensions are for violations of rules set by the team’s management council.
Sports information director Jason Hove says one starter, and three often-used reserves are among those being disciplined.
The athletic department did not release a list of the suspended players.
SD RUSHMORES… The Nicks South Dakota 70+ Rushmores hit a bump in the road in their World Series play when the California Bears handed them their first loss, 8 - 5
Phil Clements allowed ten hits and issued six walks in seven innings. The Bears got six hits and six of their runs were earned.
Kent Rolfing led the Rushmores with three singles in four trips while Ev Bradshaw and Lew Ingalls were both 2-3. Trooien; Howard Bich, Clements, Jerry Kluess, Jack Sayles, and John Somerville each singled.
D-DRAFT…The two NBA Development League teams in the Dakotas are ready for the D-League draft.
The Dakota Wizards in Bismarck are holding their draft party at The Lodge at The Stadium bar and restaurant on Thursday night, and the Sioux Falls Skyforce are holding theirs at Heather Ridge Village.
The D-League draft is held via teleconference. The Skyforce pick fourth and the Wizards 12th in the opening round. The Los Angeles D-Fenders have the first pick.
VIKINGS STADIUM…The Minnesota Vikings look unlikely to get any decision from the state's legislature this year on financing for a new stadium.
Gov. Mark Dayton says the stadium push is in "limbo" and complains that leading lawmakers won't support his efforts to settle the issue before the team's lease at the Metrodome runs out at the end of the season.
House Speaker Kurt Zellers voiced opposition to a special session on it before the end of the year. Zellers says he believes people should see a specific proposal aired in public hearings before a special session is called. But Dayton says he's abandoning plans to introduce a specific proposal next week.
Vikings Vice President Lester Bagley says "the strategy of avoiding a stadium issue has not worked."
