South Dakota State University President David Chicoine is the winner of the
2011 Spirit of Enterprise -- an award giving annually by the Enterprise Institute
of South Dakota.
The award is given for personal commitment, dedication and achievement in
entrepreneurship. Chicoine received the award in Sioux Falls Wednesday
during the Innovation Expo 2011.
Tim Weelborg is executive director of the Enterprise Institute. He says
"President Chicoine's vision and leadership continues to have significant
impact on the economic development of the state and the region."
Weelborg says the effort of the university to create new knowledge through
research-based initiatives and form partnerships to commercialize that
knowledge is the essence of the Spirit of Enterprise.
A press release notes that since Chicoine arrvied on campus in 2007,
research funding has hit 67-million dollars annually -- an increase of
145-percent.
Chicoine says he was honored and surprised by the award.
