SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Data shows that fewer out-of-state
residents are moving to Minnehaha County, but more than half of
residents relocating to the area still come from outside South
Dakota.
Migration data from the Internal Revenue Service shows that 51
percent of new Minnehaha County residents in 2009 were from another
state. This is down from 2005, when 57 percent of new residents
came from out of state.
Experts say the economy can be partly to blame for the decline.
State demographer Mike McCurry says it can be hard for someone
to move out of state when they can't sell their house. But the housing
market hasn't been hit as hard in South Dakota, so it's easier for
in-state residents to relocate.
