Memorial Dedicated to Fallen Officers

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Hundreds of people gathered in Rapid
City to dedicate a memorial to two police officers who were killed
in the line of duty.
The memorial was dedicated Sunday at the site of the Aug. 2
shootout that cost Officers J. Ryan McCandless and Nick Armstrong
their lives. City Alderman John Roberts says the memorial will help
the city heal, and also remember.
The $10,000 memorial was built with donations. A church donated
the property. The city plans to add a garden around the monument.
The shooting that authorities say began as a routine stop for a
reported disturbance also wounded Officer Tim Doyle. He recovered
and has returned to duty. The suspect in the incident was shot by
police and died the next day.
