Tu Holloway returned from a one-game suspension and scored 24 points to lead No. 13 Xavier to an 86-63 victory over IPFW on Tuesday night.
Holloway was suspended for the season opener against Morgan State for playing in too many summer league games, a violation of NCAA rules.
Xavier (2-0) got a big second half from junior guard Mark Lyons, who finished with 21 points. Lyons had just two points at halftime but went 4 of 6 from 3-point range after the break. Musketeers freshman Dezmine Wells scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half.

Kannon Burrage scored 22 points and Sei Paye hit a running 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Texas-San Antonio to a 78-77 victory against Oral Roberts in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off on Tuesday night.
The Roadrunners (2-0) rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to lead by eight with less than 4 minutes to play, then let Oral Roberts storm back to take the lead.
Dominique Morrison hit a jumper from the right baseline to put the Golden Eagles (0-2) up 76-75 with 31.2 seconds left. Warren Niles missed a pair of free throws and Steven Roundtree made only one of two after getting fouled on the offensive rebound for Oral Roberts with 4.6 seconds left. That opened the door for Paye to hit the game-winner.
Roundtree finished with 22 points, Niles scored 20 and Morrison had 17 for Oral Roberts.

AUGIE BB…Augustana made a defensive stand on the University of Sioux Falls' final possession, effectively holding off the Cougars and picking up 64-63 win in the fifth annual Prairie Spirit Charitable Challenge Tuesday night at the Sioux Falls Arena. SDSU WBB…
The South Dakota State women’s basketball team visits Middle Tennessee State Thursday night to renew what’s become somewhat of a rivalry – you’ll hear the game on the Ranch AM 910 starting at 5:30.
Head coach Aaron Johnston says the 2-and-0 Jackrabbits have shown they have multiple offensive threats – but need to get more from the inside game. Plus, SDSU needs to eliminate bad fouls. 97631 :31 “in the future”.
Johnston says Middle Tennessee tries to create offense from its aggressive, half-court defense. He says SDSU needs to ramp up its defensive effort in response. 97632 :30 “our aggressiveness defensively”.
SDSU returns home Sunday to host Washington State.

NCAA STIPEND…The NCAA recently approved several rule changes – among them, allowing schools to give certain student-athletes an additional two-thousand dollars a year to help cover the full cost of attendance.
South Dakota State athletic director Justin Sell says individual schools should make the decision to offer the additional aid. 97633 :20 “to deal with”.
Sell says, in some cases, the extra money may make a difference in where a student-athlete attends college.
Sell says the aid is to go to full-scholarship athletes. 97634 :23 “full scholarship sports”.
Sell says the stipend sound good in theory, but practically, questions remain.
He says, in his opinion, student-athletes shouldn’t be paid – many of them leave school without debt, unlike most students. But Sell says the extra stipend is small enough, most schools could manage it. 97635 :32 “will fall in”.
Sell says, at SDSU, scholarship athletes may need an extra four, to six-thousand dollars, to meet full cost of attendance.
Sell covered the topic recently on the “Sports Show” on the Ranch AM 910 radio in Brookings.

IA STATE SUSPEND…
Iowa State backup receiver Albert Gary has been charged with first-degree robbery stemming from a June incident in Ames.
University police say the 22-year-old redshirt sophomore form Ocala, Fla., surrendered to the Story County sheriff Tuesday. He's being held on $25,000 bond. A call from The Associated Press to his attorney, Matthew Boles, wasn't returned.
Gary is accused in a June 19 campus robbery. Police say a man claimed he and two others were approached by about six men, and one patted him down while displaying a handgun.
Coach Paul Rhodes said Monday that Gary had been suspended for three games and will be available for Friday night's game against No. 2 Oklahoma State.

BIG TEN FB…Nothing is settled in the Big Ten with two weeks left in the regular season.
Michigan State leads the Legends Division and Penn State tops the Leaders Division. They will meet in Indianapolis for the conference title if they win out.
The conference has been unpredictable all season. Wisconsin looked like a national title contender and was the Leaders Division favorite before losing to Michigan State and Ohio State. Penn State coach Joe Paterno is out, and now the Nittany Lions will have to hold off Wisconsin. Ohio State was positioned to make a move in the Leaders Division before losing at Purdue.
Nebraska controlled the Legends Division after beating Michigan State handily, but the Cornhuskers lost to Northwestern the next week and now need help to get to Indy.

ILLINOIS FB…Illinois coach Ron Zook isn't interested in talking about job security.
Zook told reporters this week that he would end his weekly news conference if anyone asked about his job following four straight losses and a weekend of off-field trouble for his players. He kept his promise, walking out after he was asked if had talked to his players about handling questions about his future.
The seventh-year Illini coach started the season with six wins, but has now watched his team lose four in a row.
Over the weekend, starting linebacker Trulon Henry was shot in the hand at a party where two other people were shot. In another incident, two other reserve players were arrested following a fight on campus. Zook suspended them.

FB PROGRAM ELIMINATED…The football program at the West Virginia University Institute of Technology is being eliminated after state lawmakers declined to immediately fund improvements on the Montgomery campus.
West Virginia University senior associate provost Russ Dean released a letter to the WVU Tech community Monday evening. It came after the Legislative Oversight Commission on Higher Education Accountability endorsed a report for improvements but wouldn't commit to funding them.
A study had recommended a significant cash infusion to ensure WVU Tech's survival. Dean wrote that among the first steps will be eliminating Tech's football program. Media outlets report student scholarships and employee contracts will be honored.
Tech coach Scott Tinsley says he's surprised by the decision.
WVU Tech, a member of the NAIA Mid-South Conference, went 1-9 this season.
