Fight Not Cause of Inmate Death

SPRINGFIELD, S.D. (AP) - An inmate finishing up a five-year
sentence on a drunken driving conviction faces a misdemeanor simple
assault charge for a fight that preceded another inmate's death.
The Argus Leader reports that Corrections Secretary Dennis
Kaemingk says it does not appear that the death of 62-year-old
Dennis Lashley was related to the alleged fight with his roommate
at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield, 49-year-old Kendall
Osteen.
Authorities say the two men fought Tuesday morning over a TV
remote. Lashley was later found unresponsive in his room. Attorney
general spokeswoman Sara Rabern says the cause of death isn't being
immediately released. She says the investigation is ongoing.
Bond for Osteen is set at $20,000.
Lashley had been serving 10 years in prison on a drunken driving
conviction.
