SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A South Dakota program that helps
low-income families buy homes is feeling the effects of the tough
economy.
The Governor's House Program is on pace to sell the fewest
number of houses this year since the program began in 1996.
Officials say there are many reasons for the decline, including the recent
economic recession.
The houses cost $35,500. Families who buy them are responsible
for finding and buying land. The program is self-sustaining and
uses no state tax dollars.
The program has sold 2,001 houses in 16 years. Officials expect
only about 80 to be sold this year, a big drop from the program's
high of 218 houses in 2002.
