Brookings police arrest a man after he breaks into a home to steal booze.
According to Lt. Derrick Powers, a woman called police shortly before 2:00
o'clock Sunday morning. She was in the basement and said there was an
intruder in the home. At one point, the man was in the basement and even
opened her door.
Police arrived a short time later. The man had left the home and was running
away. He was told to stop but continued to run and was caught by police in
the nearby First Lutheran Church parking lot.
The man had broken the glass in the front door to get into the home. He
removed alcoholic beverages from the fridge and may have rummaged
through a dresser.
The 21-year-old Brookings resident is charged with first-degree burglary,
fleeing, intentional damage to property and criminal trespass.
Other people live in that rental home but the 20-year-old woman was the
only one home at the time of the intrusion.
