Two Men in Custody After Farm Shooting

ONIDA, S.D. (AP) - Bond has been set for two farmhands charged
in connection with a weekend shooting at a party on a central South
Dakota farm that left one man hospitalized.
Twenty-year-old Zane Van Der Merwe and 31-year-old Stephan Van
Der Berg appeared in court via television from Hughes County Jail
Monday afternoon. Judge John Brown set Van Der
Merwe's bond at $50,000 cash and Van Der Berg's at $10,000. The two
were arrested on aggravated assault charges after the Sunday
shooting near Onida.
Sully County State's Attorney Emily Sovell told Brown that the
preliminary investigation showed Van Der Merwe "was the primary
aggressor" in the shooting.
The man who was shot was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital with
what authorities termed serious injuries. He was not immediately
identified.
