ALL-MVFC TEAM…Seven players from South Dakota State have been honored on the all-Missouri Valley Football Conference Team. Voting for the all-conference awards was conducted among the league's nine head coaches, sports information directors and select media.
Leading the Jackrabbit contingent was first-team punter Jason Schlautman. A senior from Columbus, Neb., Schlautman led the league with an average of 42.2 yards per punt. A transfer from Nebraska-Omaha, Schlautman recorded 14 punts of 50 or more yards, including a season-long of 63 yards.
Three Jackrabbit players earned second-team honors, including senior wide receiver Dale Moss. In his lone season playing football, the senior from Brandon tied for the team lead with 61 receptions and led the squad with 949 receiving yards (15.6 yards per catch), while also catching six touchdowns. Moss led the league with an average of 86.3 receiving yards pergame and was part of a three-way tie for receptions per game with 5.5.
Two members of the Jackrabbit defense - linebacker Mike Lien and defensive back Winston Wright - also were second-team honorees. A senior from Castaic, Calif., Lien posted a team-best 100 tackles, recording 10 or more stops five times. He also returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown at Illinois State and added an interception and four pass breakups during the season.
Wright, a sophomore from Lee's Summit, Mo., started all 11 games at cornerback and led the team with three interceptions and seven pass breakups. He finished the season strong by returning a fumble 68 yards for a touchdown and adding an interception in the 2011 finale at Western Illinois. Wright ranked fifth on the Jackrabbits with 57 tackles, including three forloss.
Rounding out the Jackrabbit honorees were honorable mention selections Aaron Rollin, Kyle Sheehan and Bryan Witzmann.
SDSU WBB…South Dakota State opens the Summit League women’s basketball schedule this week with games at IUPUI and Western Illinois.
Head coach Aaron Johnston says the Jackrabbits attitude is good after losses to Cincinnati and Marist at the Cancun Classic.
He says SDSU will see two essentially new programs this week. 97621 :17 “league this year”.
Johnston says neither team presents extraordinary personnel issues – in fact, may be underrated. 97622 :25 “we’ve addressed it”.
Johnston says SDSU may have been trying to be too precise with its execution – he says players need to relax and have fun playing.
SUMMIT BB…Reggie Hamilton scored 35 points Monday night as Oakland, Mich., beat Tennessee 89-81. Drew Valentine added 15 points, Laval Lucas-Perry 14 and Travis Bader 13 for Oakland (4-2). Jordan McRae led the Volunteers (3-3) with 25. Cameron Tatum had 19.
Last season the Golden Grizzlies beat the then-seventh-ranked Volunteers 89-82 in Knoxville — Oakland's first win over a Top 10 team. Tennessee joins Oregon as the only major-conference programs to lose twice to Oakland since its move to Division I in 1999.
Oakland led 62-52 with 10:15 to play, but the Volunteers scored the next seven. Hamilton answered with a 3-pointer and a layup to move the margin to eight, and the Grizzlies got a break when Kenny Hall's tip-in came to a stop on the back of the rim.
Valentine's 3-pointer gave Oakland a 73-65 lead with 3:51 left, and the Grizzlies held off the Volunteers down the stretch.

South Dakota led 33-24 before Tabor ran off 10 unanswered points and took a 34-33 lead with 15:43 left. But trailing 41-39, South Dakota scored seven points in a row, ending with Krogman's basket, for a 46-41 edge with 10:53 to go.

The Hoyas (5-1) led at halftime 32-31, and scored the first 10 points of the second half to go up 42-31. The Jaguars (2-5) led for nearly all the first half. Alex Young, a 6-foot-6 senior forward, whose presence drew 10 NBA scouts in the half-empty Verizon Center, scored IUPUI's first 10 points. He made his first three shots, had 16 at halftime, but missed 11 of his last 12 and was scoreless in the second half.
