SDSU MBB…Griffan Callahan's tip-in with 39 seconds left in overtime helped give South Dakota State a 97-93 win Thursday over IUPUI in the Summit League opener for both teams.
Callahan, who scored 20 points, cleaned up a miss by Nate Wolters, who led all scorers with 32. That gave the Jackrabbits (5-3) a 95-93 lead. A free throw by SDSU's Brayden Carlson made it 96-93 before Alex Young, who had 28 points for the Jaguars (2-6), missed a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left. Another Carlson free throw sealed the win.
Head coach Scott Nagy was proud his team didn’t totally collapse after leading by 13 at halftime. 97631 :17 “that this year”.
IUPUI took its first lead of the second half, 82-80, on consecutive 3-pointers by Young. A Wolters 3-pointer and two Callahan free throws put SDSU back up by three. With six seconds left, IUPUI's Sean Esposito was fouled and made one free throw, but missed his second. Young grabbed the offensive rebound, was fouled and sank both shots to force overtime.
Nagy says Young shot the Jaguars back into the game. 97632 :20 “put it away”.
Nagy’s happy to get the league-opening win on the road. 97633 :20 “little comfort space”.
SDSU plays Saturday night at Western Illinois.

BHS GBB…The Brookings girls’ basketball team is preparing for a Tuesday season opener – hosting Watertown in an ESD Conference affair.
Brookings has to replace Cassidy Kotelman, who’s now at Black Hills State – along with Amanda Woodring and Kaylee McMacken. But head coach Lynn Frederick’s pleased with what he’s seen offensively. 97625 :18 “into the season”.
The Bobcats are still figuring out their identity – but Frederick says they’ll be balanced. 97626 :21 “things for us”.
Brookings will feature some size inside – at least five players are 5-8, or taller: 97627 :12 “inside, I think”.
Frederick says Aberdeen Central’s the pre-season conference favorite, with Yankton, Mitchell, and Watertown as teams to watch. He says it’ll be a balanced Class “AA” field this season.

Brookings wrestling coach Scott Miller.

MILLER HURT…Mike Miller has been sidelined by hernia surgery for up to eight weeks.
The Mitchell native and 12-year NBA veteran confirmed Thursday he has undergone surgery Tuesday. An ESPN report said Miller is expected to miss at least a month of the 2011-2012 season, which opens on Christmas.
This was the third time Miller, 31, has undergone surgery since the NBA season ended with the Heat falling to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals. He had shoulder surgery and thumb surgery during the summer.

SKYFORCE ARENA…The NBA Development League team in Sioux Falls plans to soon leave the building it has called home for more than 20 years.
Skyforce President Mike Heineman says the franchise plans to move from the Arena to a new facility that Sanford Health is building.
The Skyforce have played home games in the Arena since the team's inaugural 1989-90 season. The franchise will have to negotiate with Arena officials to get out of the last year of the current lease if the team is open the 2013-14 season at the new venue, which is dubbed the Pentagon.
Arena Executive Director Terry Torkildson says the venue has enough advance notice of the impending Skyforce departure to adjust its business model and attract other events.

BORK BATTLE…A Dakota Wesleyan University track athlete who lost his left leg to cancer shortly after high school is battling the disease again.
Hunter Bork is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for a tumor on his neck. The 21-year-old Bork says doctors are worried the tumor will affect his spinal cord.
Bork has a prosthetic leg. He set a record in the high jump at the U.S. Paralympics last summer. Now he's focusing on another cancer battle. He says he's confident he'll win.

McNABB…Donovan McNabb is available again.
The Minnesota Vikings waived the 13-year veteran quarterback Thursday, giving him the opportunity to sign with another team for the stretch run. McNabb says he can help another team: 97634 :20 “him better”.
Head coach Leslie Frazier pushed for the Vikings to trade a sixth-round draft pick this summer to the Washington Redskins in exchange for McNabb. He wanted stability he believed McNabb would bring to the offense after the NFL lockout kept rookie Christian Ponder from practicing with the team or working with his coaches until training camp.
McNabb says he has no regrets about his career. 97635 :13 “been outstanding”.
Frazier and McNabb met in 1999, when the defensive backs coach and the first-round draft pick spent their first year with Philadelphia.
Frazier says the parting was mutual: 97636 :21 “future endeavors”.
Friendly to the end, Frazier wished McNabb well, saying part of the reason for the move was for the player's sake.
