SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A judge said Wednesday he cannot accept
a guilty plea from a man accused of killing a 75-year-old Sioux
Falls woman until he hears testimony from psychiatrist.
James McVay is charged with first-degree murder and burglary in
the July 2 death of Maybelle Schein. Police say McVay stabbed
Schein to death and then stole her car as part of a scheme to drive
to Washington, D.C., and kill President Obama.
The state has said it would seek the death penalty.
The 41-year-old McVay appeared in a Sioux Falls courtroom Wednesday
and pleaded guilty but mentally ill to first-degree murder.
A hearing to determine McVay's mental health status has not been
scheduled.
