PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Legislature is returning to
work after a five-day layoff.
The Legislature had planned a three-day weekend for the Martin
Luther King holiday, but the layoff was extended another two days
because of the death of former Gov. Bill Janklow. A memorial was
held in the Capitol in Pierre on Tuesday, and Janklow's funeral was
held in Sioux Falls on Wednesday.
The House and Senate planned to return to a full schedule of
committee hearings and floor sessions Thursday.
A committee planned to discuss a bill that would make the sale
of collectible coins subject to the sales tax. Another panel
scheduled a hearing on a measure that would speed up increases in
the taxable value of some agricultural land.
