SDSU FOOTBALL…South Dakota State signed eighteen high school, and three junior college, football players to national letters of intent Wednesday.
Offensive coordinator Eric Eidsness says defense was a huge need area with this class – twelve are on that side of the ball: 97624 :33 “is really exciting”.
Eidsness says the three junior college players – defensive back Andrew Brown, defensive end Rob Diane (die-ANNIE), and defensive end Marshall Peugh – will have to make an impact. 97624 :20 “there, as well”.
Eidsness says the Jacks wanted some offensive linemen, a big running back, and a speed back, and found those.
Two South Dakota players are on the list – Herman Kleinsasser of Sully Buttes and Nick Mears of Milbank: 97625 :57 “of good things”.
In addition, linebacker Nick Meixell of Lake Crystal, Minnesota, has been accepted for admission to SDSU.

Head coach Lang Wedemeyer says the list is heavy on defenders: 97621 :13 “a little bit”.
Wedemeyer says defense was somewhat a need area: 97622 :23 “side of things”.
Wedemeyer says two or three signees will have to make an immediate impact. 97623 :14 “of this group”.
Last fall, SDSU won the Summit League regular season title and posted a scoreless minutes streak defensively that spanned the entire conference schedule.
SDSU WRESTLING…The South Dakota State wrestling team takes to the road for a pair of duals at the SIU-Edwardsville
Triangular before beginning its string of conference duals.
The Jacks are 3-4 (0-2 Western Wrestling Conference) on the 2011-12 campaign after falling to WWC foe Air Force on Sunday.
The team found great success at the lower weights early this season. Aaron Pickrel, Dustin Walraven and Nick Flynn are a combined 48-21 record in the first two and one-half months of the season. The trio is 15-5 in the first seven duals, as well.
SDSU is led by head coach Jason Liles. In his 18 seasons at SDSU, Liles posted a 144-134-5 record to become the all-time wins leader in school history.
HUETHER…Former South Dakota State baseball coach Erv Huether has died.
Huether passed away Tuesday night at Brookings Hospital. He coached the Jackrabbits from 1950 through 1983, compiling a 352-376-2 record. His teams won six North Central Conference titles and earned one NCAA tournament berth.
Some of his former players include Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Langer; Wade Adamson, who pitched in the Minnesota
Twins system; and Greg Kallevig, who made it to the Triple-A level in the Chicago Cubs organization.
Current athletic director Justin Sell says Huether impacted many people. 97627 :23 “our athletic program”.
Sell says Huether, and former A-D Stan Marshall, may be the two individuals most associated with the SDSU athletic program: 97628 :23 “of that list”.
The SDSU baseball facility bears Huether’s name. A recent gift will allow construction of a new grandstand, press box, and other amenities.
