PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota legislative committee that
puts together the state budget will soon get an update on how much
revenue state government might collect next year.
The Joint Appropriations Committee expects to get revised
revenue projections sometime this week. Based on how much the state
will receive in tax collections and other revenue, the committee
then can decide how much money can be spent in the state budget for
the year beginning July 1.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard and the Legislature cut spending in most
state agencies by 10 percent to deal with a budget shortfall a year
ago. But Daugaard is proposing to start increasing state aid to
schools, medical providers and others in the new budget year.
