Brookings police say a man was stabbed by his girlfriend in a Sunday
night incident.
It was reported shortly before nine o'clock with a 911 call. Police
Lt. Derrick Powers says it happened in a room at the Sonshine
Inn. He says a 33-year-old Brookings woman called and said her
boyfriend had been abusive to her and she stabbed him in the leg.
Powers says the two had been arguing throughout the evening. At
one point, he reportedly choked her and she left. She later returned
and says the man held her by the hair on the ground and struck her on
the back of the head. That's when she used a paring knife to stabb
him in the leg just above the knee.
The man initially refused transport to the hospital. Police determined
he was the primary aggressor and he was arrested for simple assault.
After his arrest, he was taken to the hospital for treatment and then to
jail.
The 40-year-old Brookings man is charged with simple assault.
The woman has not been charged.
