Inmate walks away from Rapid City lockup

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Authorities are looking for an inmate who walked away from a minimum-security prison in Rapid City on Sunday.

Twenty-five-year-old Derek Bissonette (BISS'-uh-net) has been serving a four-year sentence for attempted grand theft in Pennington County, in western South Dakota.

South Dakota's Department of Corrections says Bissonette is an American Indian, about 5-foot-9 and about 140 pounds.

The Rapid City unit's manager says Bissonette went missing between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sunday. He says the unit has almost 100 inmates.

The unit isn't locked and inmates can leave, although there are penalties for doing so without permission.
