SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A former South Dakota election official says she's a "little bit concerned" about Secretary of State Jason Gant's endorsement in a South Dakota Senate Republican primary.
Gant is backing Republican state Rep. Val Rausch of Big Stone City against incumbent GOP state Sen. Tim Begalka of Clear Lake.
Gant is South Dakota's top election official. Republican Joyce Hazeltine was secretary of state for 16 years. She says she never endorsed anyone because of her role in supervising elections.
Gant replaced Republican Chris Nelson as secretary of state. Nelson says he also didn't endorse anyone during his eight years in office.
Gant says his endorsement won't affect his job as an election official. He's also served as state chairman for Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum.
