SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A federal court jury has ruled that a former Flandreau police officer did not use excessive force when he broke a woman's leg during an arrest six years ago.
Plaintiff Shaylene Montoya had accused Justin Hooper of breaking her shinbone with a kick when he responded to a domestic dispute call. She had been seeking more than $50,000 to cover medical bills, as well as unspecified damages for pain and suffering.
The jury sided with Hooper after fewer than two hours of deliberations on Wednesday.
Hooper is now a special investigator with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
