ALL-STAR BUCKETS…If you’re a fan of a grind-it-out, defensive brand of basketball you may want to stay away from the South Dakota-Wyoming High School All-Star basketball games at the Donald E. Young Center in Spearfish. If you like a wide-open, run-and-gun style, make sure you get a ticket.
The boys game, the 20th annual edition of the contest, will take place at approximately 7:30 p.m., after the 19th annual girls game at 5:30 p.m. The teams will then travel to Gillette’s Campbell County High School North Campus on Saturday night for the Wyoming leg of the event.
SDSU WRESTLING SIGN…The South Dakota State wrestling team continued its recent stretch of signings with two transfers...
David Klingsheim and Eric Orozco join the team after spending time at other institutions.
Klingsheim transfers from the University of Nebraska, where he was the 2011 Big 12 Champion and NCAA Qualifier at 125 pounds. Klingsheim started both seasons at Nebraska and was a two-time California State Champion in high school.
Orozco transfers from West Hills College in California, where he was the California Community College State Champion at 133 pounds this season. Orozco was also named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
The duo makes seven signings since Bono was named head wrestling coach.
SDSU TENNIS SIGN…The South Dakota State women's tennis team and head coach Michael Engdahl announced the signing of top United Kingdom recruit Ffion Davies.
Davies is from Swansea and is currently ranked No. 1 in 18U Wales, as well as No. 2 in Wales Senior Ladies.
Davies is consistently ranked in the top-30 in the United Kingdom, and ranked as high as No. 15 in UK Open Ladies and is currently ranked No. 71. She won multiple tournaments, including three-time 18U Welsh doubles champion and UK Summer Grand Prix champion.
Davies represented South Wales in all age groups, including senior ladies, each year during the County Cup.
The women's tennis team graduated five of its nine roster players from last season.
DSU ASST SOFTBALL…Betsy Westermann has been named assistant softball coach at Dakota State University.
Westermann is a 2009 graduate of Jamestown College. She was a three-year starter for the Jimmies as a middle infielder. During her collegiate career, Westermann earned All-Conference and Gold Glove honors for her success at second base.
Westermann completed her graduate work while serving as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Northern State University. While at NSU, she served as the Wolves' infielders coach. After earning her graduate degree from Northern State, Westermann spent this past season at NCAA Division II Black Hills State University. She served as the team's strength and conditioning coach, infielders' coach and assistant recruiting coordinator.
Westermann will be the Lady T’s infield coach, camp/fundraising coordinator, as well as the assistant recruiting coordinator.
ABERDEEN BASEBALL…Amateur baseball is back in Aberdeen due largely to the efforts of a North Dakota native.
The Aberdeen Circus Sports Bar baseball team will take to the field on Sunday at Northville with a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. Aberdeen, the state's third largest city, hasn't fielded an amateur team since the Aberdeen Orthopedics/Plaza Pharmacy in 2009.
The impetus for getting a team together came from recent Northern State graduate Tyler Bauman of Beulah, N.D. The Circus team has two players 20 years old or younger and two older than 30, but the bulk of the 18-person roster is made up of players from 23 to 27 years old. The roster includes Kassidy Gaines and Jordan Wakefield from Northern, Matt Kervin and Josh Cunningham from Presentation and former Aberdeen Smittys Legion teammates Shane Cunningham and Tyler Newman.
NCAA GOLF…Illinois sophomore Thomas Pieters shot a final-round 71 to win the men's NCAA Division I golf championship Thursday at Riviera Country Club.
Pieters finished at 5-under 208, three shots better than Julien Brun of TCU and Florida's Tyler McCumber.
Alabama went wire-to-wire in stroke play to grab the No. 1 seed going into Friday's match play. The Crimson Tide finished with a three-day total of 7-over par 859. UCLA finished second, two shots behind. Texas, San Diego State — California, Washington and Oregon earned the other spots.
Florida State and Kent State finished tied for the eighth and final spot. They will return Friday morning and all five team members will play sudden death with the best four scores counting.
BIG 12 AT TEN…Oklahoma State president Burns Hargis says the Big 12 is satisfied at 10 teams, though he acknowledged that if Notre Dame was interested in joining the league, "that's something we would have to pursue."
Hargis, who chairs the league's board of directors, spoke Thursday during the Big 12's annual meetings at the InterContinental Hotel in Kansas City.
He said that Big 12 administrators are all "very satisfied" with 10 teams, but nobody in the conference is willing to shut the door provided the right opportunity arises.
That could mean a school such as Florida State, which has expressed interest in the conference, or even Notre Dame, a traditional independent in football that might need to join a conference depending on how a college football playoff shakes out.
NCAA PLAYOFF…NCAA president Mark Emmert says another round of conference realignment could be sparked by schools trying to improve their chances to play in the proposed four-team college football playoff.
Emmert was in Kansas City Thursday to discuss various issues with representatives of the Big 12, who were conducting their annual meetings at the InterContinental Hotel.
He said the dust may have finally settled on conference realignment, but warned that a change to the postseason system could set the wheels in motion again.
Emmert called it "unrealistic" that teams from the power conferences would break away from the NCAA to form their own organization, as some have speculated. He also cautioned about the growing gulf between the "haves" and "have-nots" of major college sports.
IOWA ROWING… Iowa women's rowing coach Mandi Kowal has resigned after an 18-year tenure in which she built the program but also faced scrutiny over her treatment of athletes.
Athletics director Gary Barta announced Kowal's resignation Wednesday, calling her an "outstanding person" who was dedicated to the program.
Rowing is Iowa's largest women's sport, with up to 80 participants. Kowal headed the program since it assumed varsity status in 1994. She pushed for a new boathouse, which opened in 2009.
The resignation comes amid a lawsuit brought by ex-coxswain Margaret Krusing, who claims she developed a painful condition in her legs after poorly supervised workouts. Her attorney says the state recently agreed to settlement talks.
A recently released 2008 memo shows Kowal was instructed to "bring about a culture of student-athlete well-being."
JUNE OUTDOORS MONTH…Gov. Dennis Daugaard has joined with states nationwide to proclaim June as Great Outdoors Month.
In the proclamation, Daugaard says a connection with nature is an essential component of our physical well-being – time outside combats obesity and diabetes, reduces stress levels, and decreases symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
Many opportunities for outdoor activities are provided by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks in its efforts to expand and enhance state parks, protect our wildlife heritage, and create programs that introduce youngsters to the wonders of the outdoors.
