Three hurt in fiery collision

Three people are hurt in a fiery collision. It happened about 8:45 Sunday morning at
the Highway 14 Bypass and 34th Avenue in Brookings.

Police Lt. Derrick Powers says a westbound S-U-V driven by 23-year-old Austin
DeZeeuw of Elkton was hit by a southbound car that failed to yield at the stop sign.

The car was driven by 18-year-old August Hewson of Buffalo, South Dakota. That car
was on fire with Hewson trapped inside when police arrived at the scene. Bystanders
had attempted to help and they told police the victim was seriously injured. The officer
used fire extinguishers from his patrol car to try and put out the fire but it did not work.

The officer and one of the bystanders pulled Hewson from the vehicle through the
window.

The second vehicle ended up on its top in the south ditch. Two passengers,
55-year-old Rufus DeZeeuw and 54-year-old Patricia DeZeeuw, were both hurt.

The three injured were taken by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital.

Hewson was taken to Sioux Falls.

Brookings Fire Department and the South Dakota Highway Patrol also assisted.
