PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) - Fall River County Auditor Sue Ganje is disappointed in the turnout at a voting center on the Pine Ridge Reservation leading up to the primary.
In the six weeks before the June 5 election, only 46 people voted at the center. With 31 days of actual voting, that meant fewer than two voters per day.
The voting center was set up after a group of 25 reservation residents filed a federal lawsuit seeking the same six weeks of early voting that were provided elsewhere in the state. Fall River County provides election services for Shannon County because Shannon does not have its own courthouse, and only six days of early voting initially were planned.
Ganje says she hopes turnout is better for November's general election.
