Chicago-based Bel Brands USA is holding a groundbreaking ceremony this week for a
new cheese plant in Brookings.
Governor Dennis Daugaard, Bel Brands officials, Brookings Mayor Tim Reed and
representatives from South Dakota State University are expected to attend the Thursday
morning event.
Earlier this year, Bel Brands announced that they had chosen Brookings for the location
of its third cheese plant in the United States.
The company said it will invest about 100-million dollars in the plant that will employ
more than 200 people initially and could mean up to 400 jobs within three years of
becoming fully operational in 2014.
Thursday's ceremoney is set for 10:30 at the site of the future plant on 34th Ave.
