SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) - The Crow Peak Fire burning in western South Dakota's Black Hills near Spearfish has grown to 125 acres but is about 50 percent contained.
The forest fire was sparked by lightning on Saturday. It is burning in steep, rugged terrain. Officials say they were helped by rain Monday night, but Tuesday brought hot, gusty weather. The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for western South Dakota indicating dangerous wildfire conditions.
About 170 people are battling the Crow Peak Fire on the ground and in the air. The Crow Peak Hiking Trail remains closed to the public.
