PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota health officials are asking doctors to be alert for syphilis cases after reports of 10 cases in the eastern part of the state.
State Epidemiologist Lon Kightlinger says South Dakota's last outbreak of the disease was in 2006 and 2007. He says last year there were no cases, so the rash of cases this year is "concerning."
Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is primarily transmitted through sexual activity.
