PAYTON CANDIDATES…Three Missouri Valley Football Conference student-athletes represent the league on the 2012 Walter Payton Award Watch List. RB Shakir Bell (Indiana State), QB Kurt Hess (Youngstown State) and RB Jamaine Cook (Youngstown State) are among the 20 initial nominees.
Twelve of this year's initial 20 nominees were finalists for the award last year. The 2011 finalists returning to the Watch List are quarterbacks Casey Brockman of Murray State, DeNarius McGhee of Montana State and Brad Sorensen of Southern Utah; running backs Jordan Brown of Bryant, Timothy Flanders of Sam Houston State, Andrew Pierce of Delaware and Terrance West of Towson; fullback Eric Breitenstein of Wofford; and wide receivers Aaron Mellette of Elon and Rodrick Rumble of Idaho State.
Joining the Watch List are quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke of Old Dominion and Jeff Mathews of Cornell; running backs Zach Bauman of Northern Arizona, Matt Denham of Eastern Kentucky and Miguel Maysonet of Stony Brook; all-purpose player Richard Sincere of Sam Houston State; and wide receiver Ryan Spadola of Lehigh.
HOOPS HONORS…Nine Summit League men’s basketball players were recognized for the academic achievements as members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) 2011-12 Honors Court. Half of The Summit League’s 10 teams from 2011-12 had at least one student-athlete honored.
Kansas City led the way with four selections followed by Summit League Champion South Dakota State with two. IUPUI, North Dakota State and Oakland were also represented on the list.
To qualify, a player must be a junior or senior, have a GPA of at least 3.2, spent at least one year at their current school, and their school must be an NCAA or NAIA member.
Representing SDSU are Brayden Carlson and Tony Fiegen. From UMKC are Dustin Dibble, Kirk Korver, Trevor Mason and Thomas Staton…from IUPUI is Nick Kitcoff…Jordan Aaberg represents NDSU…and from Oakland is Travis Bader.
USD-BISON TX… A number of North Dakota State University football fans have tickets to a game between Colgate and South Dakota, thanks to an unusual two-game ticket promotion.
USD officials are worried that NDSU fans could fill up Howard Wood Stadium in Sioux Falls for a Coyotes-Bison matchup on Oct. 20, so they offered a promotion where Coyotes fans could get tickets to that game and the Colgate game for $35.
The Forum newspaper reports that NDSU fans also are taking advantage of the promotion. USD officials didn't intend for that to happen, but ticket operations coordinator Brad Simons says, "if it happens, it happens."
He says some Bison fans have expressed a willingness to donate the Colgate tickets back to USD.
NDSU won the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision title last year.
FLW FISHING… Some of the world's best walleye anglers are battling it out on Lake Oahe (oh-AW'-hee) in South Dakota.
The National Guard FLW Walleye Tour event is being sponsored by Pierre's Chamber of Commerce Thursday through Saturday. Top prizes total $63,000 in the pro division and $10,500 in the amateur division.
Pro Ted Takasaki (tah-kah-SAH'-kee) of Sioux Falls says the lake is "full of hungry, biting fish" but they seem skinnier this year. He says anglers won't have any problem catching their limits, and the tournament will come down to who lands the bigger, fatter walleye.
Final weigh-in is at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Pierre Walmart.
WATERFOWL SEASONS…The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission has proposed 2012 waterfowl hunting seasons with few changes from the 2011 season.
South Dakota’s waterfowl hunting seasons are subject to guidelines set by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The guidelines will not be finalized until late July, but the Commission proposals fall within the expected season structure.
The proposed duck hunting season would have one change from 2011. If approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the daily limit for redhead ducks would be increased from two to three. The season dates for duck hunting would be: High Plains Zone, Oct. 13-Jan. 17; Low Plains North and Middle Zone, Sept. 29-Dec. 11; and Low Plains South Zone, Oct. 13-Dec. 25.
With the proposed change for redhead ducks, the daily duck limit would be a total of six, with no more than five mallards (of which no more than two could be hens), three wood ducks, three redheads, two scaup, two pintails, and one canvasback.
A proposed change for the Canada goose season from 2011 would increase the bag limit from three to five daily and from six to 10 as possession limit. The increase would be part of continued efforts to reduce the Canada goose population, which has increased beyond management goals.
Another proposed change for the Canada goose season is a correction to the unit descriptions for Units 1 and 2, removing Perkins County from the Unit 1 description and changing U.S. Highway 14 to U.S. Highway 34 in Hyde County in Unit 2.
The Canada goose season dates would be: Unit 1, Oct. 1-Dec. 16; Unit 2, Nov. 3-Feb. 15; Unit 3, Jan. 12-20. The season for light geese would be Sept. 29-Dec. 23.
