Man indicted for murder faces federal trial first

HOT SPRINGS, S.D. (AP) - A Hot Springs man accused of killing his mother will first face trial on unrelated federal charges in Pennington County.

26-year-old Matthew Tornquist is charged with possession of a stolen firearm and possession of an un-registered firearm. The trial is set for Aug. 14.

Fall River County Sheriff Rich Mraz says that Tornquist will be transferred to his county jail to face state charges in his mother's alleged death once the federal trial is over.

A three-count indictment last week charges Tornquist with killing of his mother Catherine Tornquist, who was reported missing the first week of October. Her remains have not been found.

Tornquist has been jailed on the firearm charges since earlier this spring.
